A handsome local boy. An Irishman lost at sea. And a neighbor who thinks monsters are real. Cora's life is about to change forever.

With her future uncertain, Cora finds herself at the beach with her family for the summer. There, she’s forced to make a decision: invest in lucrative connections in the glimmering world of second homes where her parents belong, or get lost in the local mystery surrounding a lonely old woman whose husband disappeared.

Through the fantastical tales and anguished memories of Mrs. O’Leary, as well as the company of a particularly gorgeous local boy called Ronan, Cora finds an escape from the reality of planning her life. But will it come at the cost of alienating her family, who struggle with tragic memories of their own?

One summer by the sea will launch Cora on the journey of a lifetime, taking her across the ocean to Ireland, where a living legend awaits her.

If you like classic boy-meets-girl stories with a paranormal twist, then you’ll love this magical tale of first love riddled with mythical mysteries.

The Selkie Myth

Anchor 3

First, you need to know all about seals. I can help you there:

Now for the magical part. Selkies are creatures from Celtic mythology that are said to be seals who can shed their skin and transform into human form. It's said selkie women often fell in love with human men, and the man had to hide her sealskin to keep her on land.

But if she ever found her sealskin ... she would be gone the next day.

It's a myth that spread from Scotland all over the British isles, but there are similar myths elsewhere. The history of the tale is fascinating and varied, so make sure to check out some of these resources for more info:

Other great selkie stories in movie form that I recommend are:
